AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL

We love America! This theme begins with a patriotic salute to America for the Fourth of July holiday and continues with information about our country’s geography and national parks. The children will explore the Rocky Mountains all the way to our nation’s capital!

GOING FISHING

Fishing is a hobby enjoyed by people all over the world. Fish can be found in lakes, rivers, or even oceans! Learn about the equipment needed to catch “the Big One!” Children may enjoy adopting a pet fish for your setting during this theme..

• July is National Blueberry Month. Purchase some blueberries from your local grocery store. Find a blueberry recipe and prepare it with your child (see “Fresh Blueberry Sauce” on the back of this newsletter). Cooking is a great way to learn by experience because it involves the whole child – physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Cooking activities can also increase a child’s vocabulary and mathematical skills.

• Invite your child to help wash the family car. This experience will give your child a sense of responsibility and promote his or her self-esteem.

ACTIVITIES FOR HOME

•Look for star shapes on holiday decorations at home and around town. Count the stars. How many points does each star have?

•Plan a family picnic and invite your child to help plan the menu and other items you will need to bring along.

•If possible, take your child fishing this week. Choose a safe area that is kid friendly. Observe the vegetation and landscape that surrounds the body of water. What kinds of fish live there? How big are the fish that you are catching?

•Consider stopping at the local pet store or zoo to observe fish in aquariums. Talk about the different colors and sizes of the fish. Look through various fish books as well.

HELP ME REVIEW:

In the summer months, we review all the letters of the alphabet, numbers 1-20, colors, and shapes. Read alphabet and number books to your child to reinforce this review. Practice counting items around the house and sing “The Alphabet Song” with your child as you go about your day. Name colors and shapes as you see them outdoors while enjoying summertime activities.
